Researchers working with volumetric radio astronomy data anno
tate regions of interest to isolate sources for analysis. In iDaVIE, an
immersive virtual reality tool for exploring three-dimensional astro
nomical data cubes, annotations are defined as three-dimensional
binary masks identifying the voxels belonging to a source. How
ever, the current annotation display uses a wireframe overlay that
obscures the data within the annotation, preventing the annotation
boundary and interior data from being perceived simultaneously, a
challenge referred to throughout this paper as the dual visibility
problem. This project investigated whether four illustrative rendering
techniques improve annotation perception compared with the exist
ing wireframe rendering in iDaVIE.
