SchoolBoyRugga addresses the fragmentation of South African school rugby information across social media, school websites, third party websites and messaging groups. Fans and parents need timely, trustworthy match information without searching multiple sources. Schools need a controlled way to publish updates and manage match attendance, while SchoolBoyRugga’s administrators need to reduce manual information gathering and verification. These stakeholder needs establish the business requirement for a central platform that improves information access, supports ticketing and enables community participation with appropriate oversight. The intended business value is greater supporter engagement, more efficient administration and wider match coverage.
Our solution is a mobile-first application connecting the supporter’s journey before, during and after a match. Each fixture provides a shared context for match details, ticket purchases, live score contributions, community discussion and news.
The application uses Flutter and Dart for the interface, with Riverpod managing state. Its architecture separates presentation components, domain models, application controllers and data repositories. Firebase Authentication manages identity, Cloud Firestore stores application data, and Firebase Storage holds media. TypeScript Cloud Functions perform sensitive backend operations, while Paystack supports payments.
Major features include match rooms, community-driven live scoring, results and news viewing, QR-based ticketing and role-based administration. Score aggregation considers contributor reliability and recency. Ticketing includes server-side price validation, payment verification and safeguards against duplicate issuance. Community moderation combines text filtering, reporting and administrator controls to reduce harmful interactions involving young players.
Development highlighted the importance of server-enforced rules and reusable logic. The project demonstrates how connected information and transaction services can address stakeholder needs within one platform. Further user evaluation and load testing are needed to assess benefits and capacity at broader scale.
