About

Abstract

PyTutor is a system that uses a Small Language Model (Microsoft Phi 3.5) and 3 adapters to help tutor first year Python students (for CSC1015). It contains a chatbot, lessons and quiz module. The chatbot module has been specially trained using LoRA to only provide hints and guiding questions. It runs entirely locally on standard student hardware for fast accessible help, with a built in prompt injection guard. The lessons module provides detailed notes on weekly lessons that is based on the CSC1015 curriculum. It is unique to each user and provides coding exercises based on test content. The quiz module allows the user to generate questions based on topics from CSC1015, across 7 different question formats. Users can provide some input on what they re interested in and it will generate a quiz centred around this interest.
