The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab at the Department of Computer Science, University of Cape Town (UCT), promotes community-based innovation, connecting communities and advancing human-centred technology design. Our research sits at the intersection of computing and human experiences, exploring how technologies can address real-world challenges, connect communities, promote digital inclusion, and enable communities to actively participate in shaping technologies that reflect their needs, experiences, and local realities, particularly in underserved communities.
Through our research activities, we explore the role of digital technologies in community empowerment. Our research adopts qualitative and participatory research methods to better understand the factors that influence digital participation and how technologies can be designed to respond to community needs.
As our research progresses, our conception of design has moved from considering the form and function of an artefact to thinking more of “the experience of the human beings that make and use them in situated social and cultural environments”.
