About

Abstract

This project addresses critical inefficiencies in South Africa's medical sample transportation system, where a lack of real-time visibility between healthcare facilities and laboratories results in high sample rejection rates, compromised sample integrity, and delayed patient diagnoses. Blood samples often deteriorate during transport due to inadequate temperature control and tracking mechanisms.

The Medical Sample Tracking System employs a three-tier architecture integrating React.js frontend, Node.js backend, and PostgreSQL database. The system incorporates a Blockchain-as-a-Service platform using Algorand network for immutable audit trails. The system’s role-based interfaces serve healthcare facilitators, lab technicians, transporters, and administrators, enabling comprehensive sample lifecycle management from collection through delivery to the laboratory

The system successfully implements temperature breach notifications through simulated sensor data, digital chain-of-custody transfers with unique verification codes, and blockchain-verified custody documentation.  The solution addresses critical operational challenges, including standardised collection processes, multi-stakeholder coordination, and cold chain integrity monitoring. The deliverable provides end-to-end sample traceability framework, demonstrating capabilities for reducing rejection rates and improving laboratory resource planning for enhanced patient outcomes across South African healthcare networks.
