Business Requirements
Bulkmatech Cape's Bulkmatech Waste Solutions (BWS) division faces operational inefficiencies due to static collection schedules and lack of real-time visibility. This results in high fuel costs, unnecessary trips, and missed community engagement opportunities. The business requires an intelligent solution to optimize routes, reduce operational costs by 34%, lower emissions by 25%, and strengthen partnerships with community organizations like RLabs and ReCha.
Proposed Solution
The Community Upliftment System implements a Route Optimization System using IoTenabled smart bins with ultrasonic and weight sensors deployed in underserved communities, piloted at UCT residences. The system monitors bin levels in real-time and dynamically generates optimized collection routes to reduce fuel consumption and support community
cleanliness.
Design Architecture and Technology Stack
The solution uses a three-tier architecture: a Presentation Layer with React for web interfaces, a Domain Layer utilizing Google OR-Tools for route optimization, and a Data Access Layer with CouchDB/PouchDB for real-time synchronization and SQL Server for structured data. The stack includes Raspberry Pi devices with PLCs for sensor data collection, Mapbox for mapping services, and Firebase for notifications and authentication.
Major Features
The system addresses four critical gaps: real-time bin monitoring replaces fixed schedules through sensor-equipped bins transmitting data to a centralized database; dynamic route optimization using OR-Tools generates efficient collection paths displayed on interactive Mapbox maps; a comprehensive reporting system allows operators to log issues with admin notifications and tracking; and an admin dashboard provides complete visibility into Areas, Users, Bins, and Reports for strategic planning.
Conclusions
The Route Optimization System resolves operational inefficiencies while advancing environmental sustainability and community upliftment objectives. With estimated first-year ROI and proven feasibility through the UCT pilot, this solution provides a foundation for expanding smart waste management across South Africa's urban communities.
