Abstract
The Discovery Data Access Platform project was initiated to address the growing need for a secure, centralized and user-friendly solution for managing data. The key business requirements were to simplify data access across departments, ensure consistency in reporting, improve governance and enable faster, data-driven decision-making, all while maintaining robust security and compliance.
Our proposed solution was the development of a web-based platform using Next.js for the front-end and Supabase for backend services. This tech stack was selected for its scalability, flexibility and ability to support SQL-based architecture, ensuring reliability and familiarity for data teams. The system design integrates role-based authentication, fine-grained access control and a centralized dashboard that enables users to seamlessly request, retrieve and monitor datasets. By consolidating previously fragmented processes, the platform significantly reduces manual overhead and the risks of duplication or inconsistent access.
The platform’s major features include streamlined request and approval workflows, automated audit logging for accountability and enhanced visibility into data usage. Some of the added features include analytics with a download function and dark mode version. These features not only improve compliance but also foster transparency and trust between stakeholders and the data team while fostering user experience.
In conclusion, the Discovery Data Access Platform successfully demonstrates how modern cloud-based technologies can address business requirements for efficiency, governance and security. By bridging the gap between data accessibility and compliance, the solution empowers Discovery to unlock greater value from their data while ensuring responsible and controlled usage.
