The SALSA project was undertaken to develop a conceptually dance education platform for social dancing in South Africa. To do these two components of this platform were created, a Step Notation component and a Video Annotation component. The Step Notation was designed as a web application allowing users to create salsa dance sequences using displayed foot position images based on the rules of dancing. The Video Annotation component was designed as an Android app allowing students to submit videos for annotated teacher feedback and allowing teachers to create annotated video quizzes for students to use to learn dance theory. Both components found positive reception with participants during evaluations with major criticism for the step notation tool being mainly centered functionality which could be improved, while the video annotation tool had some user difficulties due to the lack of some features like arrows for navigation of annotations. These criticisms were then used to develop additional features to improve the components. In conclusion both tools were evaluated positively by participants and successfully proved that they could have a positive impact on the ability of students to learn and educators to teach in the social dance education space.
