Open Box is a global software development consultancy. Open Box has years of experience delivering solutions to companies from all parts of the globe. Open Box works well with companies of the globe regardless of locus because they are not confined by time zones, they believe in being to connect and provide solutions without having to be in the same boardroom as their clients. The organisation consists of a highly dedicated and talented staff motivated by delivering the best solutions and tools to their clients. Due to the culture of the Open Box organisational structure paired with the restrictions that the hard lockdown brought to all people of the world, staff were more remote than ever before, with many teams finding themselves working in different time zones.
In previous years Open Box made use of other software and applications to participate in fitness and wellness challenges that incorporated both the aspects of team and self, but they did not have an application made specifically for them and their use. With the loom of COVID-19 there was no longer availability of shared and communal spaces to participate in wellness activities.
As the UCT Team of 3rd year students, we were then sourced to create an application to keep the office culture of Open Box cultivated and to keep the individuals making up the organisation connected regardless of location. Open Mind is a web-based application that serves Open Box employees the purpose of managing personal goals, joining teams, competing against each other, and tracking individual and team progress. This web app allows employees to create and update their own personal goals and track them once they are completed. Goals can be of differing natures: fitness, wellness and health. Employees can be allocated to 1 of the 6 teams by the super admin. A user in the system can be a basic user or a team leader. The team leader is responsible for creating team wide goals and events and updating them on the team’s behalf. The team leader will also monitor the team leader board and dashboard in order to keep his/her team on track. The leader board will rank teams and individuals based on the most goals completed. The dashboard will show various graphs depicting the statistics of the number of completed goals per goal category. The goals that can be made in the system don’t relate to any work-related tasks, these goals serve the purpose of helping employees to destress, to instil drive and enhance their overall wellbeing.
